Join a tribe

There was a time in Israel when God instructed Moses to take a census of men twenty years and above, able -mighty men of valour- to serve in the army. From each tribe, one leader emerged. From each tribe were heads of families, brave warriors, gatekeepers, musicians, etc.

Around the time of the kings, (especially from around David’s reign,) we’d again find the appointment of “cap-able” men from each tribe. For example, the Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribes of Manasseh had thousands of vigorous men ready for military service. Not only them, but several other tribes produced battle-ready men.

Each tribe had able men who took up responsibilities in the Tabernacle, etc. There were priests, musicians, heads of Levite families, gatekeepers, and more.

Men were responsible for caring for the rooms, treasuries, furnishings and other articles of the sanctuary.

Men were entrusted with the responsibility of baking bread. Some were put in charge of preparing every Sabbath the bread set out on the table.

No duty was too small for anyone.

Do you remember the story of David’s Mighty Warriors? Read about them in 1 Chronicles 11.

I’m always amazed by the exploits of these men. They handled the spears against thousands and struck down giants.

One time David was in the cave of Adullam and the Philistines had encamped in a valley. The king longed for water. Three of the thirty men broke through the Philistine lines and drew water from a well for David. The king was too amazed by their brevity. He refused to drink it. Instead, David poured out the water in honour of God because the three risked their lives for him.

Today, we have many brave men. And we thank them immensely.

However, we need more godly, honest, faithful, and diligent warriors who will step up, take charge in all areas of life and remain committed to their duties.

More men need to join “the tribe.”

To celebrate the fathers, I have this little collection of poems, ‘Rise! CapAble Men.’  Be on the lookout.

Tick Tock to Father’s Day.
